Birds in Watercolour, Imbil, September
September 21
Imbil RSL Hall,
127 Yabba Rd, Imbil
9am - 4pm
In conjunction with my exhibition, ‘It’s Only Natural’, I am presenting this full day art workshop on painting birds in watercolour.
You’ll learn essential techniques for rendering feathers, beaks, and other intricate details. Explore the nuances of watercolour painting, from mixing colours to mastering brush strokes, while bringing these feathered friends to life on paper. Basic bird anatomy will also be covered, including some practice drawing.
With expert instruction, demonstrations and personalized feedback, you'll leave with a beautiful bird painting and newfound confidence in your watercolour skills.
Some basic experience with watercolour is preferred, but newcomers to painting are also welcome. Jan will provide the option to use templates for tracing.
All bookings HERE. Please don't use the shopping cart below. Thanks.
What to Bring:
Paints –Professional watercolours in your favourite brand(s). Include a magenta (permanent rose), a primary yellow (i.e. a yellow that is not lemon or tending towards orange) and a phthalo blue.
Paper – For this workshop you will require 300gsm Cold Pressed (Medium) or Hot Pressed (Smooth) watercolour paper in sheets, pads or a block. We’ll be working about A4 size, and you’ll only need 2 sheets that size at the most. ONLY buy Artists’ quality. Arches or Saunders Waterford are excellent brands. If you can’t get either of those, then Fabriano Artistico is also good (but not the other Fabriano varieties), or Baohong. Don’t compromise on paper, cheaper brands are useless when layering is required! A watercolour block is ideal as there is no need to stretch the paper. The size needs to be from about A4 or larger.
Brushes - Bring whatever watercolour brushes you already own but include some “rounds” with sharp points. (One small for details, a medium size and one larger.) A squirrel hair “mop” would also be handy if you own one or a hake, any brush really for larger areas.
Palette – The large plastic palettes with lots of wells and a lid are my recommendation; otherwise bring what you own. Even ice-cube trays will do for puddles of colour, but you’ll need something with a larger flat surface for mixing paint on.
Other Necessities – Drawing equipment (pencils and an eraser- preferably a kneadable eraser), 1 sheet of graphite transfer paper (no other type will do), an old hand towel or rags, tissues, 2 plastic containers for water and masking tape. A pipette or something for squirting small amounts of water would also be handy. Also think about bringing a board with something that will prop up one end for keeping your painting surface at an angle.
I will bring all the reference material that is required for this workshop, but you are always welcome to bring your own copyright-free images of a bird or birds.
Please note: If you don’t have the recommended brands of paper, please bring some cash to purchase an A4 sheet from Jan.
Don’t buy the graphite transfer paper that Eckersley’s stocks as they only sell whole packs. Jan will bring some better ones for sale at $3 each.
BOOK HERE with Eventbrite. Do not use the cart below. Very important!
Update: The workshop is now booked out. Please get in touch if you are interested in booking a repeat one.
