ARTABLE WORKSHOPS
The Royal QLD Art Society (RQAS)
25 Broadbeach Blvd,
Broadbeach
9:30am - 4pm
Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of floral artistry at our weekend watercolour workshop! Designed for all skill levels, this hands-on experience will guide you through the essential techniques of floral painting, including how to beautifully capture leaves and create soft, dreamy backgrounds.
Over the course of the weekend, you'll learn to observe and paint a variety of flowers, focusing on their unique shapes, textures and colours. Jan is a very experienced instructor who will provide step-by-step demonstrations, covering everything from basic brush strokes to more advanced techniques. You’ll discover how to paint lush green leaves, exploring techniques for texture and depth, and learn how to blend colours seamlessly to achieve the perfect hue.
One of the highlights of the workshop will be mastering the art of creating blurry backgrounds. You’ll learn how to use washes and wet-on-wet techniques to evoke a sense of depth and atmosphere, allowing your floral subjects to pop off the page.
Join us for a weekend filled with creativity, inspiration, and the joy of painting in a supportive community. Leave with a collection of stunning floral artworks, enhanced skills, and a newfound appreciation for the beauty of nature!

WHAT TO BRING:
Paints –Any “Artists’ Quality” brands of watercolour in a range of different
colours. Transparent hues are most suitable for floral painting, so include some
transparent pinks (permanent rose or primary magenta), yellows and blues. Bring a
tube of Neutral Tint or I will show you how to make it from colours in your palette.
Paper – For this workshop you will require 300gsm Cold Pressed or Rough
watercolour paper either in pads or a block or sheets. It must be 100% cotton.
Experienced watercolourists may prefer Hot Pressed. Again, only buy Artists’
quality. Only Arches, Saunders Waterford, Fabriano Artistico (no other
Fabriano) or Master’s Choice by Baohong. A watercolour block is ideal as there is
no need to stretch the paper. The size needs to be from about A4 or larger.
Brushes - Bring whatever watercolour brushes you already own but include at least
one or two “rounds” with sharp points. (One small and one larger.) A squirrel hair
“mop” would also be handy if you own one or a hake, any brush really for larger
areas. Watercolour brushes can be synthetic or natural hair, but they should have
short handles, not long ones, as the long-handled brushes are for acrylics and oils.
Palette – The large plastic palettes with lots of wells and a lid are my
recommendation; otherwise bring what you own. Even ice-cube trays will do for
puddles of colour, but you’ll need something with a larger flat surface for mixing
paint on.
Other Necessities – Drawing equipment (pencils, eraser, ruler etc.), *1 sheet of
graphite transfer paper (no other type will do), an old hand towel or rags, tissues,
2 plastic containers for water and masking tape. A pipette or something for
squirting small amounts of water would also be handy. Also think about bringing a
board with something that will prop up one end for keeping your painting surface
at an angle.
I will bring a range of reference material that is required for this workshop, but
you are always welcome to bring your own copyright-free images.
*Jan will have sheets of graphite transfer paper for sale for $3 each. Don’t buy a
whole pack from Eckersley’s as those ones are for using in a printer.
