DAY 1 - FLOWERS IN WATERCOLOUR
Saturday Feb 8
9am-4pm
HBAS
In this hands-on class, you'll learn essential techniques to capture the delicate beauty of blooms using watercolour. This is Jan’s speciality and favourite subject. The day will be spent painting the subtleties of colours and tones found in flowers and learning how to achieve correct form and depth. All reference materials will be provided, and it is not essential to have drawing skills as templates will be offered for transferring images. Some basic experience with watercolour is preferred.
DAY 2 - BIRDS IN WATERCOLOUR
Sunday Feb 9
9am-4pm
HBAS
After day 1 of painting flowers in watercolour, Jan Lawnikanis is presenting a workshop on painting birds in watercolour for day 2.
You’ll learn essential techniques for rendering feathers, beaks, and other intricate details. Explore the nuances of watercolour painting, from mixing colours to mastering brush strokes, while bringing these feathered friends to life on paper. Basic bird anatomy will also be covered, including some practice drawing.
With expert instruction, demonstrations and personalized feedback, you'll leave with a beautiful bird painting and newfound confidence in your watercolour skills.
Some basic experience with watercolour is preferred. Jan will provide the option to use templates for tracing to save time for painting.
Please book through HBAS
What to Bring:
PAINTS: A range of professional quality watercolours and a large palette with plenty of room for mixing washes. Please don’t bring cheap paints as they are full of fillers and white paint. Please include a Phthalo Blue, Primary Yellow (any mid yellow that isn’t lemon or leaning towards orange or mustard) and Magenta (Permanent Rose). From these 3 primaries, any colour can be mixed.
BRUSHES: A variety of watercolour brushes in different sizes, including a large mop brush or similar for backgrounds and some smaller fine point brushes for detail. Watercolour brushes should have short handles as the long handle ones are for oils and acrylics.
PAPER: 100% cotton watercolour paper, 300gsm in either Medium or Rough texture, at least A4 size. The only acceptable brands are Arches, Saunders Waterford or Masters Choice by Baohong. Fabriano Artistico is also acceptable as a last resort. No other brands please, as others will just result in frustration!
OTHER BASICS: 2 water pots, an old bath towel or terry towelling face washer, tissues, a board larger than your paper, masking tape. A plastic pipette or medicine dropper. If available, one sheet of graphite transfer paper. Jan will bring some for sale for $3 per sheet.
STATIONERY: Pen and paper for writing notes. Graphite pencil, eraser and scissors.
REFERENCES: Jan will provide the references for this workshop, but you are welcome to bring any of your own, or copyright-free images, of birds and/or flowers.
Please BOOK THROUGH HBAS. Link available soon. Don't use the shopping cart below. Thanks.
