Designing With Colour, Woodford, March
Monday March 24
Woodford Community Art Group
Woodford Museum & Art on Woodford
109 Archer St,
Woodford QLD 4514
9am-4pm
Leading on from the previous colour theory workshop, this day will be all about tackling a deeper understanding of the colour wheel and the beauty of using colour systems.
You will also learn how to create luminous relationships between lights and darks, warm and cool colours, and greyed complements. Learn how to make colour combinations pulsate by using the science of simultaneous contrast. A combination of colour theory, exercises and a quick watercolour painting project will give participants a greater understanding of using colour to make paintings come alive. These techniques would be valuable knowledge for all media.
What to Bring:
Paints – Artist quality watercolour paints. Include 3 primary colours, preferably MaimeriBlu - Primary Red Magenta, Primary Yellow and Primary Blue Cyan. These are available from Musgrave Art & Stationery in Southport https://musgraveart.com.au/product/maimeri-blu-jan-lawnikanis-primary-colour-set/ and Yandina Art and Framing http://www.yandinaartframing.com/ Also online from various sites.
Otherwise, bring Holbein - Quinacridone Red, Imidazolone Yellow and Phthalo Blue Yellow Shade or Winsor & Newton- Winsor Lemon, Winsor blue (Red Shade), Permanent Rose. Or Daniel Smith- Phthalo Blue, Hansa Yellow Medium, Quinacridone Rose. Or Art Spectrum - Spectrum Yellow, Phthalo Blue, Permanent Rose. Brands can be a mix of any of those.
Paper –You will require 300gsm Cold Pressed watercolour paper in Medium or Rough. Experienced watercolourists may prefer Hot Pressed paper instead. My recommendation is to buy a watercolour block as the paper is already stretched. ¼ or ½ sheet size is fine. The ONLY recommended brands are Arches, Saunders Waterford, Fabriano Artistico or Master's Choice by Baohong. (In that order). No other brands!
Brushes - Bring whatever watercolour brushes you already own, but include at least two ‘rounds’ with a sharp point (one small and one larger), plus a small flat. There are so many good brushes on the market I won’t specify any particular brand, but just make sure they are designated watercolour ones and not brushes with long handles which are designed for oils and acrylics.
Palette – The large plastic palettes with lots of wells and a lid are my recommendation. Make sure it has a large enough mixing area.
Board –Larger than your paper and something to prop up under one end for working at an angle.
Other Necessities – Drawing equipment (pencils, eraser, ruler etc, plus pen and paper for taking notes), an old towel or hand towel, tissues, 2 plastic containers for water, and masking tape. A medicine dropper or plastic pipette for squirting small amounts of water would also be handy.
Also bring your hand painted charts, wheels and palette from the previous workshop with Jan if you attended it.
Jan will supply the reference material for this workshop.
