Fun with Pen and Wash, Glastonbury, September
April 5-6
Glastonbury Hall
1329 Glastonbury Rd,
Glastonbury (near Gympie), QLD 4570
9am-3.30pm each day
Join us for a fun and relaxing weekend exploring the beautiful technique of pen and wash! This beginner-friendly workshop is designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of combining ink drawing with watercolour painting. Over two days, you'll learn how to create expressive, detailed illustrations using simple tools: pen, ink, and watercolour paints.
Jan is an experienced instructor who will guide you step-by-step, covering essential topics like sketching techniques, line work, adding texture, and creating stunning washes. You’ll experiment with different ink pens, learn how to control the flow of watercolours, and discover how to achieve beautiful contrasts between the boldness of ink and the softness of watercolour.
By the end of the weekend, you’ll have created several beautiful pieces of art and gained the confidence to continue exploring this versatile medium at home. Whether you’re new to drawing or have some experience, this workshop offers a relaxing and creative environment to develop your skills.
Templates will be provided for tracing some of the projects.
Please book through Glastonbury Hall and Recreation Association
What to Bring:
PAINTS: A range of professional quality watercolours and a large palette with plenty of room for mixing washes. Please don’t bring cheap paints as they are full of fillers and white paint. Please include a Phthalo Blue, Primary Yellow (any mid yellow that isn’t lemon or leaning towards orange or mustard) and Magenta (Permanent Rose). From these 3 primaries, any colour can be mixed.
BRUSHES: A variety of watercolour brushes in different sizes, including a large mop brush or hake for backgrounds, some smaller fine point brushes for detail and any ‘flats’ in various sizes. Watercolour brushes should have short handles as the long handle ones are for oils and acrylics.
PAPER: 100% cotton watercolour paper, 300gsm in either Smooth (Hot Pressed) or Medium (Cold Pressed) texture, at least A4 size. The only acceptable brands are Arches, Saunders Waterford or Masters Choice by Baohong. Fabriano Artistico is also acceptable as a last resort. No other brands please, as others will just result in frustration! Hot pressed paper is preferred, but medium is also acceptable.
PENS: Black felt pens with a fine point. You might like a few different sizes or if buying just one, choose a .05 size. Pens must be waterproof, not just water resistant. Other tools that are optional are glass pens and/or nib pens to use with drawing ink. India ink is useful or other drawing inks in sienna brown or sepia. Jan will bring a few nib pens and inks for you to try.
OTHER BASICS: 2 water pots, an old bath towel or terry towelling face washer, tissues, a board larger than your paper and something to prop up the end at an angle, masking tape. A plastic pipette or medicine dropper. If available, one sheet of graphite transfer paper. Jan will bring some for sale for $3 per sheet.
STATIONERY: Pen and paper for writing notes. Graphite pencil (B or2B) and kneadable eraser.
REFERENCES: Jan will provide the references for this workshop, but you are welcome to bring any of your own, or copyright-free images, of scenes from your travels etc.
