WHAT TO BRING:
Artist quality watercolour paints. Include 3 true CMY primary colours, preferably MaimeriBlu - Primary Red Magenta, Primary Yellow and Primary Blue Cyan. These are available from Musgrave Art & Stationery in Southport Homepage | Musgrave Art, and many online stores.
Otherwise, bring Holbein- Permanent Yellow Light or Imidazolone Yellow, Phthalo Blue Yellow Shade, Quinacridone Red. Or Winsor & Newton- Winsor Lemon or Winsor Yellow, Winsor Blue (Red Shade), Permanent Rose. Or Daniel Smith- Phthalo Blue (Green Shade), Hansa Yellow Medium, Quinacridone Rose. Or Art Spectrum - Spectrum Yellow, Phthalo Blue, Permanent Rose.
Brands can be a mix of any of those. Buy 12 or 15ml tubes and don’t squeeze out until the workshop. Neutral Tint is very useful. Bring a tube (or it can be dry in your palette,) or I will show you how to make it from the 3 primaries. Musgrave Art has all the choices available.
You will also need a palette with at least 6 clean wells to mix your new colours in. The idea is that from 3 colours you will create 3 more full chroma transparent secondary colours that are perfect in a row or as a wheel. So it’s important that your palette can contain these. They will be used for many months or possibly years, to come.
300gsm artist quality 100% cotton watercolour paper, Medium or Rough. One full sheet is large enough or bring a pad or block in at least A3 size. (Jan always recommends a block as the paper stays stretched. Please do not bring student quality paper, it just doesn’t work well!) The only acceptable brands are Arches, Saunders Waterford or Masters Choice by Baohong. Also Leyton or Paul Rubens (both from Temu) or Fabriano Artistico is also acceptable as a last resort. No other brands please, as others will just result in frustration!
Watercolour paint brushes – include a range of large and small ‘rounds’, and a mop or hake brush for backgrounds.
2 containers for water. Old hand towel or absorbent cloth. Tissues. A pipette or medicine dropper. Masking tape. (3M Magic Tape is useful.) 2B pencil, and a kneadable eraser. A pen and paper for writing notes. A board larger than your paper and something to prop up the far end so you can work at an angle.
Also important: One sheet of GRAPHITE transfer paper or bring a light box if you own one.
Jan will supply all the references for this workshop, including photocopies to transfer.
Morning and afternoon tea is complimentary, BYO lunch. (Refrigerator & microwave available.) Cafe downstairs and restaurants/take-aways across the road.
Cancellation Policy: Should the workshop be cancelled, any student enrolled in that class will be contacted and a refund arranged. Any out-of-pocket expenses already committed to, such as pre-arranged travel costs, unfortunately cannot be recompensed. If you are travelling, please contact Jan to confirm the workshop is going ahead.
Full payment must be made upon enrolment. Jan cannot accept responsibility for changes to students' personal circumstances that prevent attendance. Refunds will be available however, if there is at least 10 days notice. In the case of unforeseen sickness, please contact Jan. If the workshop has sufficient numbers, a partial refund might be possible. Jan needs to pay for the venue, her use of materials, transport to the venue and back from Gympie and accommodation expenses, so please understand that last minute cancellations might not be eligible for refunds. There may not be time for replacement bookings. Thank you!
