Forget everything you have learnt before about the colour wheel and learn why Cyan, Yellow and Magenta are the true primary pigments rather than Blue, Yellow and Red!
Mixing the right colour has always been one of the greatest challenges for artists. Stop struggling and learn how to make specific hues with Jan’s instruction using the CYM colour wheel and charts and have a fun time doing it! These handy tools will be used for many years to come. All templates will be provided to create your own watercolour records. Now is the time to finally have those references you always wanted but never got around to making yourself. Plus, you’ll learn how to mix common paint colours such as Indigo Blue, Hooker’s Green, and Alizarin etc. from just 3 primaries.

Designed for the absolute beginner and those who have previously learnt the fundamentals, this two-day workshop will introduce you to the wonderful world of watercolour painting!
Jan will guide you step-by-step with learning all the basics you’ll need to create simple paintings of beautiful flowers. No drawing skills are required as references will be provided to transfer.
Learn from an expert the methods of not only how to use watercolours correctly, but exactly what to avoid and how to fix mistakes. Jan will have separate projects for any students who have attended previously. These will extend flower painting skills, brushwork techniques and improve watercolour methods for all.
Have an amazing weekend where all the materials are supplied, accomplishing paintings that you didn’t think were possible!
Although this workshop is designed for beginners in watercolour, the more experienced are also welcome and will be catered for.

Topics will include: choosing colour schemes for harmony; composing an interesting but simple triptych; exploring the beauty of Neutral Tint and how to create lovely blurry backgrounds. Jan will provide plenty of knowledge and examples, along with practical demonstrations. Students will find inspiration for various ways to treat floral painting, but the methods learned can be utilised for many other subjects in the future.
This workshop is designed for those with some previous experience in watercolour painting, but beginners will also be catered for.

Leading on from the previous colour theory workshop, this weekend will be all about tackling a deeper understanding of the colour wheel and the beauty of using colour systems.
You will also learn how to create luminous relationships between lights and darks, warm and cool colours, and greyed complements. Learn how to make colour combinations pulsate by using the science of simultaneous contrast. A combination of colour theory, exercises and a watercolour painting project will give participants a greater understanding of using colour to make paintings come alive. These techniques would be valuable knowledge for all media.
This workshop caters for all skill levels, but students need to have attended a previous colour workshop with Jan and have the palette of 12 colours from the 3 CMY primaries.

Discover the joy of painting in watercolour with a very experienced tutor who has a passion for teaching beginners! You will be introduced to all the essential techniques to get you started on your watercolour journey, all while working in various styles and subjects.
Knowledge will also be gained in the areas of:
What types of paper are suitable and which ones to avoid
The difference in watercolour paints – opaque, transparent, staining, granulating etc
What brushes to use for what techniques
Mediums, palettes, and other tools
Colour theory made simple
And most importantly, how much water to add to your paint and why!
With step-by-step instructions and plenty of personal guidance, you will be amazed at how quickly your skills will improve. Plus, you’ll have some finished paintings to be proud of.
Are your drawing skills lacking? No problem! Jan will provide images to transfer so your time can be devoted to the painting process.
Materials Required: Bring your own (a list will be supplied) or if you are not ready to invest in paints, paper, brushes and a palette, you have the choice to pay Jan a fee of $30 for the loan of those items.

Just Add Water: Nature subjects in Watercolour & Colour Pencils, Toowoomba, April

Watercolours and colour pencils are a perfect match. This workshop will explore how to use them together to create vibrant and/or textural paintings of the natural world. Backgrounds and undergrounds can be painted with watercolour and the pencils used for detail work.
Bring any “failed’ watercolour paintings (optional) to see how they can be improved with the addition of pencils, used either wet or dry.
Different techniques with aquarelle (water-soluble colour pencils) will be covered. It’s quite rare to find workshops with these pencils, but students will learn many tips on how to get professional results.
Some basic experience with watercolour is essential, but newcomers to colour pencil art are welcome.

Using watercolour as the predominate medium, students will make unique interpretations of landscape and nature subjects with the addition of textures and mark-making materials. This is an exciting and creative workshop using inspiration from references and the imagination, as well as building on random watercolour outcomes.
Discover ways of building upon new watercolours to create a mixed media work or recompose old ‘failed’ paintings. Many of the ideas incorporated into this workshop are based on the methods of UK artist, Ann Blockley (www.annblockley.com) Lena Gemzoe and others.

Jan will teach you how to elevate the use of coloured pencils to a fine art medium. By layering, blending, burnishing, hatching and under-painting you can achieve either realism or creative results.

Explore a range of surfaces apart from paper that are surprisingly ideal for use with coloured pencils and discover why this medium is so versatile!

Although somewhat similar to watercolour paints, gouache requires some different techniques in its application. Its unique qualities are perfect for illustrations, poster-style work and subjects with a lot of detail. Learn how to use this medium with confidence and create an artwork with vibrant flat colour. As we’ll be working with the CMYK primary colours, some colour mixing techniques will be included.
Although this workshop is designed for beginners in gouache, those with some previous experience are also welcome.
