This colour wheel kit uses original Prismacolor colour pencils; of which 150 are available today (as of 2018), plus the metallic and neon pencils and including some discontinued colours. Please note though, that black, white and the range of greys is not included in this wheel. A chart accompanies the Prismacolor Colour Wheel which gives the manufacturer's assigned colour name to each pencil used. These are coloured in each numbered section on each lettered ring for reference.
The colours are positioned around the wheel using the CMY primaries; Cyan, Magenta and Yellow, with red, blue and green spaced evenly in between. The CMY colour system was chosen as it is a modern and improved version of colour wheels of the past.
Unlike most colour wheels, this version does not show colours that were mixed with blacks, whites and /or complementaries but rather, where each colour would sit perfectly on the wheel in relation to others pencils of its range. The purpose is to have a visual aid when choosing colours for projects. It is easy to see, for example, which pencil hues are warmer, cooler or less saturated than others by comparison, and which colours are the most similar.
Blank wheels are printed on artist quality cartridge paper. These are useful for artists to fill in with the pencils they own, thereby providing an essential tool for colour analysis.
